Preventative Maintenance for Pilings - PermaPile®
The degradation of wooden pilings and docks by wood-boring organisms in marine environments has been a well-known problem for centuries. The Limnoria Tripunctata (crustacean borer) and the Tereine Borer Shipworm (molluscan borer) are two of the most common destructive organisms found in our regional waterways, as both types of borers attack wood for shelter and food. These organisms are responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to wooden marine structures.
The old adage, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," is certainly applicable with respect to the preservation of your dock's pilings.
For a fraction of the cost of replacing a piling, a PermaPile® wrapping system can be installed that can, when properly utilized, add up to twenty years onto the life of a piling.
(For the record, the life expectancy of an unwrapped CCA (chromated copper arsenate) and/or ACZA (ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate) "pressure-treated" piling that is fully exposed to the elements is approximately seven to ten years.)
Diversified Diving Services utilizes the PermaPile® system; a molluscan and crustacean borer inhibiter system that incorporates a chemically-inert 30-mil high-density UV-resistant polyethylene jacket that encases the entire piling from the dock joist to three inches BELOW the mud line. This jacket, when applied properly, deprives the Limnoria Tripunctata and Tereine Borer Shipworms of oxygen-fresh water, food and sunlight, killing them within a matter of days. Further, this application prevents new attacks, as well as preventing the adhesion of barnacles and oysters to the wood. (It is important to note that barnacles and oysters will continue to grow on the polyethylene jacket, but without damage to the wood piling itself. Growth that occurs on the plastic tend to be limited to areas between the low and high tide marks, and are easily removed with a small spade or shovel.)
Prior to the application of the jacket, the entire length of the piling is cleaned of all marine growth. This ensures a clean tight fit for the jacket around the piling. The jacket is secured to the piling using stainless steel nails to ensure longevity. The jacket's UV-resistant properties ensure a lengthy lifespan as it will NOT become brittle and crack after extended exposure to sunlight. The application of the polyethylene jacket to the pilings can realistically add twenty years onto the life expectancy of a marine piling.
